Crews were called to Collingwood Dock, Kirkdale, at around 6.30pm yesterday after a Ford Transit van was torched. An acetylene cylinder discovered in the truck failed to catch fire. Today, crews remained at the scene on Regent Road cooling the potentially-volatile cylinder. Fire bosses said it could have caused a major explosion if it had ignited. It is unknown if the culprits were deliberately trying to set the cylinder on fire to trigger a blast. There were reports of youths seen in the area who may have been responsible. The Ford Transit van was left badly damaged by the flames and forensic experts will today examine the vehicle to obtain clues about who started the fire. A 250 metre cordon was initially set up by police and roads including Walter Street, Saltney Street, Dublin Street and Dixon Street were closed.
